RXSOL RO Biocide is a concentrated non-oxidizing biocide based on glutaraldehyde, formulated for microbiological control in industrial water-treatment systems and RO membrane installations.

It is designed to control bacteria, fungi and algae and to reduce biological growth, slime and biofilm formation in RO feed systems, pipelines, pretreatment equipment and associated water-treatment equipment.

Water injection system Biocide

Unlike chlorine and other oxidizing biocides, glutaraldehyde does not rely on oxidation as its primary antimicrobial mechanism. However, glutaraldehyde-based products should not automatically be assumed to be compatible with every polyamide RO membrane. Published membrane literature identifies aldehydes, including glutaraldehyde, as chemicals that can cause irreversible flux loss under some conditions. Therefore, the product should be used in RO systems only at concentrations and exposure conditions validated for the specific membrane.

Precautions & Remarks

Procedure of Biocide used in Reverse Osmosis Systems

It is a reactive non-oxidising biocide. It reacts with cellular proteins and other biological structures, interfering with essential microbial functions.

The general action can be represented as:

RXSOL RO Biocide→ penetration/contact with microorganism → reaction with cellular proteins → loss of cellular function → microbial inactivation

It is therefore fundamentally different from oxidizing biocides such as chlorine, sodium hypochlorite and bromine.

Identification

For systems experiencing elevated microbiological activity, an intermittent shock treatment can be considered.

General Procedure
  1. Establish the system volume and water flow.
  2. Confirm membrane compatibility.
  3. Isolate or bypass sensitive equipment where required.
  4. Dose the calculated quantity of RXSOL RO Biocide.
  5. Circulate the treated water through the designated system.
  6. Maintain the required contact period.
  7. Drain or flush the system as required.
  8. Flush thoroughly with suitable water before returning the RO system to normal operation.
  9. Monitor microbiological activity and normalized RO performance.
Shock treatment frequency should be based on microbiological monitoring and system performance.

Keywords

Because RXSOL RO Biocide compatibility with RO membranes is membrane-specific, dosage should be established by membrane supplier approval and compatibility testing rather than presenting one universal concentration.

Suggested Starting Treatment Range

For industrial water systems and RO pretreatment:

10-100 ppm active glutaraldehyde

For intermittent/shock treatment:

50-200 ppm active glutaraldehyde

The actual dosage should be determined from:
  • Microbial count
  • Biofilm severity
  • Feedwater quality
  • Contact time
  • Temperature
  • Organic loading
  • Membrane type
  • Manufacturer's chemical compatibility limits
